New High-Performance Materials: 17/4-PH and 39NiCrMo3+Pb, Machining and Treatments
Guerrini Lauro is pleased to announce the introduction of two new materials to its range of precision machining: 17/4-PH and 39NiCrMo3+Pb. These materials offer excellent physical properties, remarkable mechanical strength, and are ideal for a wide range of machining applications. Additionally, they can undergo advanced heat and surface treatments, further enhancing their performance in critical sectors such as automotive, mechanical industry, and plant engineering.
17/4-PH is a martensitic stainless steel that combines
excellent mechanical strength and
hardness with outstanding corrosion resistance. This makes it particularly suitable for applications where high mechanical performance is required, such as marine, industrial, and chemical environments.
17/4-PH is ideal for a wide range of mechanical machining processes, including:
- CNC Turning
- Heat treatments (to further improve strength and hardness)
- Surface treatments to enhance corrosion resistance
- Multi-spindle machining for precision components
Additionally, it can undergo a series of heat treatments to improve its technical characteristics:
- Solution Annealing: Heat to 1040°C for ½ hour and cool to 30°C max, in air. Oil quenching can be used for small and non-complex sections.
- Aging/Conditioning: After solution annealing, a single low-temperature aging treatment is used to achieve the desired properties, as outlined below. This treatment results in no distortion and only a surface discoloration.
Main applications of 17/4-PH include:
- Components for the chemical industry
- Valves and pumps for the petrochemical industry
- Parts for the aerospace and defense industry
- Equipment and components for marine environments
- Energy and hydraulic sectors

39NiCrMo3+Pb is an alloy steel with added lead, significantly improving its machinability. This material is known for its
high fatigue strength and
good hardenability, making it suitable for components subject to
high dynamic stresses.
Thanks to the addition of lead, 39NiCrMo3+Pb offers superior machinability compared to other alloy steels. It is ideal for machining processes such as:
- Automatic turning and CNC turning
- Precision drilling
- CNC milling
- Multi-spindle machining
Additionally, this special steel can undergo a series of heat treatments to improve its technical characteristics:
- Isothermal Annealing: For complete elimination of stresses from hot and cold plastic working
- Heating to 810/880°C
- Air cooling
- Maximum hardness: 180-240 H
- Quenching: To improve the mechanical properties of steel, giving it greater hardness and strength. The process consists of rapidly cooling a material after heating it above its critical point to induce a phase change:
- Austenitization at 830/860°C
- Oil cooling
- Tempering: Reduces the negative effects of quenching on the material (e.g., excessive hardness). It is performed in the temperature range of 550/650°C.
39NiCrMo3+Pb finds application in numerous sectors due to its mechanical properties. Among the main areas of use are:
Automotive: components such as drive shafts, axles, and gears
Hydraulic and plant engineering industries
Mechanical components for high-performance machinery
Energy sector, where high mechanical strength and reliability are required.
